Briefly explain why ammonia molecule readily coordinate with cation of the transition metals but ammonium ion (NH4+ ) does not.

A. Ammonia molecule has a lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom, which can be donated to form a coordinate bond with a transition metal cation. The ammonium ion (NH4+) has no lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom as all valence electrons are involved in bonding with hydrogen atoms, hence it cannot act as a Lewis base and coordinate with cations.
B. Ammonia molecule is neutral, while ammonium ion is positively charged, making it repel cations.
