Section A

1. 10 marks

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: In short, patriotism is love for one's country. This love is not made up by people but has already existed in our hearts. Patriotism is a natural trait, and we are born with it. We think about our country as we think about our parents; hence everyone cares deeply about where they were born. Some people disagree and are always ready to counter your arguments with the weight of their arguments. They think that patriotism is a vision of stubbornness and a sign of little civilization of the heart. To them, patriotism is a primitive belief because it sets aside other countries. They claim that one must love the whole world and that people of the world make everyone a citizen of the world, not of their small place known as their country. I must honestly say that the idea of world brotherhood is excellent in theory but impossible in practice. The best among people is the one who loves his country first. There is great doubt whether one can believe in the love of world brotherhood without loving his country; if so, patriotism proves the superiority of loving the part of the world in which we were born. Love for one's country does not imply hatred for other countries in the world. False patriotism is what makes us hate other countries. Furthermore, we must love our countries for their own sake. There should be no evil or selfish motive behind it. There is also false patriotism, which is a trick we play with our selfish intentions for bad reasons of enriching ourselves. True patriotism stems from selfless love for our countries and our respect for history and upbringing. Patriotism should not make us think that we are special people in the world and that all other tribes are nothing. Love for our countries is seen as a noble vision but meaningless if not accompanied by actions. Patriotism through actions is the only valuable one in the country, especially in danger of enemy attack. Love for one's country without actions can be good in times of peace, but in times of war, patriotism proves its sincerity in battle. Patriotism demands sacrifices of life, family, property, and everything a person has. People who give their lives for their countries are witnesses. Questions
