Section A
Read the following passage and then answer the questions that follow. Swahili has been used as a means of communication in Africa for many centuries. It is said that Swahili originated on the East African coast as a result of intermarriages between the Bantu communities and Arabs who crossed the sea to conduct trade. Later, this language spread to the interior through trade activities, religious conversions, and missionary journeys. Today, Swahili is the national language in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, and is also the official language of the East African Community. Although it is a second language for many, it is spoken by millions of people as a daily means of communication. However, the main challenge is that many people still do not appreciate its role in promoting culture and education. Many prefer foreign languages as a way to elevate their social status, a situation that prevents Swahili from getting enough space in formal settings such as courts and universities. To ensure Swahili continues to strengthen, it is important for everyone to take responsibility for using it correctly and spreading it through writing, speeches, and literature. Schools should place more emphasis on teaching Swahili so that the new generation can appreciate and use it fluently.
