Section A

1. 10 marks

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. Educational systems in various countries around the world always differ, in structure and the education provided. These systems differ because the countries themselves that provide education differ, because any education, whether formal or informal, has its purpose. The purpose itself is to pass on knowledge and traditions of a nation from one generation to another and to prepare young people to be ready to take their place in serving and developing the nation. This is how it is in all countries, i.e., feudal countries of the West, communist countries of the East, and even how African countries were before colonialism. Therefore, it is not true to say that before colonialism, Africans did not have education, just because they did not have schools, and that a few tribes provided training for a short time in camps. Children and young people learned by living and doing. At home or in the field, they learned the skills of the work that had to be done, as well as the behavior that people of that society should have. They also learned about the types of leaves and roots of forest trees, and their uses; they learned how to handle harvests and how to look after livestock. All this they did in cooperation with those older than them. Thus, societies learned the histories of their tribes, and the relationship between one tribe and other tribes, the relationship between their tribes and spirits by merely listening to stories told by elders. In this way and by the cooperative customs they were taught, the cultures of the country were passed on. Therefore, the education they received, the lack of classrooms did not mean that education was absent, nor did it diminish the importance of education in the Nation. Therefore, it is entirely possible that the education a young person received in those days was an education suitable for living in his society. In Europe, classroom education began long ago. The goal of this European education was the same as that provided in the African traditional style, i.e., by living and doing. The main purpose was to strengthen the traditions that were used in the country, and to prepare children and young people to fulfill their responsibilities in that country. And this is how it is in communist countries today. The training provided is different from that provided in Western countries, but the goal is one: to prepare young people to live in the nation and serve that nation, and to pass on the wisdom, skills, and traditions of the nation to the next generation. Wherever education fails to meet these goals, the development of that country will falter, otherwise there will be complaints when people realize that their education has prepared them for a life that does not actually exist.
