They conducted the experiment by germinating maize seeds in two pots labeled "R" and "X". In each pot, they put the same type and amount of soil. The seeds germinated in pot "R" were watered and sprouted after five days, while the seeds placed in pot "X" were not watered and no seeds sprouted.
